WELCOME TO TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK
Tanjung Puting National Park is one of Indonesia’s most remarkable natural treasures and among the most important orangutan conservation areas in the world. Located in Central Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, the park covers more than 400,000 hectares of tropical rainforest, peat swamp forest, mangroves, and river ecosystems. Originally established as a wildlife reserve during the Dutch colonial period, the area was later designated as a national park to protect its extraordinary biodiversity and the fragile habitats of endangered species.

Unlike most national parks, Tanjung Puting is explored primarily by river. Aboard a traditional wooden klotok, visitors travel through winding jungle waterways surrounded by ancient rainforest. Along the journey, it is common to encounter orangutans in the treetops, proboscis monkeys gathering along the riverbanks, and an incredible variety of birds and wildlife thriving in their natural environment. Every bend of the river reveals a new discovery, offering a rare opportunity to experience one of the world's oldest and most diverse ecosystems.
Today, Tanjung Puting is best known as one of the last strongholds of the endangered Bornean orangutan. These remarkable great apes share approximately 97% of their DNA with humans, making them one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. The park gained international recognition through the establishment of Camp Leakey in 1971 and the pioneering conservation work of renowned primatologist Dr. Biruté Galdikas. Tanjung Puting also provides sanctuary for proboscis monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, crocodiles, and hundreds of other wildlife species, making it one of Southeast Asia’s most important biodiversity hotspots.

At Sagara Borneo Tour, we believe that Tanjung Puting is more than a destination—it is an experience that inspires wonder, appreciation, and a deeper connection with nature. Through our personalized river journeys, experienced local guides, and carefully managed klotok fleet, we invite travelers from around the world to discover the beauty of Indonesia’s rainforest, encounter its iconic wildlife, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
